The Mural Project + #BeALadyChallenge

With Covid-19 continuing to challenge our well-being, we remain at home, including many women who are stuck in unsafe circumstances. The majority of sexual assaults happen at or near a victim’s house. Birdie wants to send a message of support to these at-risk neighbors.

One of our founders lives on a highly-trafficked, reservoir walking path in Silverlake, Los Angeles. She and her teen daughters used their house as a canvas to paint a mural inspired by Camille Rainville’s poem “Be a Lady They Said.” The mural celebrates the positive influences of five rockstar women––Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Lupita Nyong’o, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Greta Thunberg, and Oprah Winfrey––who each defy the impossible expectations of the poem. Our mural is a fresh reminder that we stand in support of one another.

The community response is awesome with 100s stopping to inquire, cheer, and bravely tell their stories. Women want to share what they’d write on their own masks––some stick post-its on the mural and some take the #bealadychallenge. Join us, we want to hear what you have to say! Post on social media a masked-selfie with a “Be A Lady” limiting-message that you defy. Your participation sheds light on the impact of these messages and inspires us to stand together in love and support.

How to participate:

1. Post a masked selfie with a "Be a Lady" message you defy on Instagram or Facebook.
2. Nominate 2 friends
3. Tag and Follow @shes_birdie
